These may include theoretical and empirical contributions that focus primarily on the relationship between work and social reproduction.
[CFP] Conference 2019 – Moving Beyond Capitalism Working Group
Two complimentary parts of any social change in history have been a criticism of what is wrong with the exiting situation, and a suggestion of an alternative that would not suffer from those problems. Existing political economy has almost exclusively focused on the former, with some political economists, particularly some from some Marxist traditions, arguing it is inappropriate (“unscientific”) to engage in the latter, that doing so is harmful to promoting social change. IIPPE’s Moving Beyond Capitalism (MBC) working group is dedicated to promoting the discussion of the latter among political economists. For the past several years the MBC working group has participated in IIPPE’s annual conferences with panels. This year it intends to do so again, and this is a Call for proposals for papers and activist proposals. This Call is open to any political economy contribution addressing anything related to the issue of Moving Beyond Capitalism.

Brazil’s history is repeating itself: democracy at stake
On October 7th, 2018, Brazilian citizens witnessed the consolidation of the far-right as the leading political force in the country. The former military Jair Bolsonaroalmost won in the first round for the presidency. His party – the Social Liberal Party –achieved one of the largest congressional benches in the Chamber of Deputies (51 out of 513 seats) and candidates associated to Bolsonaro excelled in Senate, Gubernatorial and Legislative Assemblies elections all around Brazil.
Media Amnesia: Rewriting the Economic Crisis
Following the news coverage of a decade-long crisis that includes the 2008 financial crash and the Great Recession, the UK deficit, the eurozone crisis, austerity and rising inequality, we see that coverage is suffering from an acute amnesia about the policies that caused the crisis in the first place. Rather than remembering its roots in the dynamics of 'free market' capitalism, the media remains devoted to a narrative of swollen public sectors, out-of-control immigration and benefits cheats. How has history been so quickly rewritten, and what does this mean for attempts to solve the economic problems?
